- Abstract
- This paper describes the architecture of a video production system based on a centralized, high-performance file system with a robotic tape-based archive. This system permits the applications in the production process to access content directly, without file transfers, and allows content to be available for editing and processing immediately after it is received. A high-performance file system can perform simultaneous reads and writes at an aggregate bandwidth of 12 Gbytes/sec or more. A video production system architecture based on a centralized high-performance storage system, accessed directly by the production applications, is presented in this paper in contrast to the more traditional architecture based on video servers and file transfers.

Henry Chadwick is currently manager of the IBM Video Center of Excellence in Bethesda, MD. He joined IBM in 1977 and has been working in the area of digital video systems since 1991. Previously, he has worked on deep-space, satellite, and wide-area communications and networking. He holds five U.S. patents and has published numerous papers in conferences and journals. Chadwick received a B.S. from MIT in 1960, an M.E. from Yale in 1964, and a Ph.D. from New York University in 1967, all in electrical engineering.Leonard DeGolladobio
Leonard DeGollado joined IBM in Bethesda, MD, in 1985 and is currently leading a performance team in testing and integrating broadcast and digital media components with IBM's disk and tape-storage products. Since joining IBM, he has been involved in several digital media and broadcasting projects involving MPEG-1, MPEG-2, Video-on-Demand, and transmission of MPEG-encoded material over terrestrial and satellite delivery systems. He has been awarded several patents in the area of digital media. DeGollado received a B.A. in sociology from the University of Maryland in 1978, majoring in statistical research.Skip Griffinbio
Skip Griffin joined IBM in 1998 and is currently working on integrating IBM storage with broadcast-oriented digital video servers and nonlinear editors. While at IBM he has been involved with system engineering for video-based solutions. He has spent the last 15 years testing, measuring, integrating, and supporting all different types of digital video compression formats. Griffin received a B.S. in computer science from the University of Maryland in 1986. - Copyright
