Abstract
Advances in post-production technology make it ever easier to manipulate captured images in new ways; to perform functions such as changing of frame rate and insertion of virtual objects. However, such processes could be improved or made significantly easier by capturing additional data at the camera. The MetaVision project, funded by the European Union's Information Society Technologies (IST) program, has been investigating how to capture and record such data and how to use it to assist the post-production workflow. Now, in its final year, the project has developed a camera system demonstrator capable of capturing additional data in the form of high-frame-rate images and images for depth estimation. Experiments are being conducted using this camera system, which will allow the concepts pioneered by the project to be tested. This paper discusses some of the innovative aspects of the camera system and presents some results.

Graham Thomas joined the BBC Research & Development department in the U.K. in 1983 after graduating from Oxford University with an honors degree in Physics. He was awarded a Ph.D. from the University of Essex in 1990 for research in motion estimation. Most of his recent work has focused on techniques for virtual studio production, including the development of the award-winning free-d camera tracking system. Thomas currently leads a team of engineers who are developing a range of production technology based on 3-D graphics and image processing. He recently led Prometheus, a U.K. government-funded R&D project to develop an object-based 3-DTV system. He is the (co) inventor of over 20 patents and has published many papers on image processing for broadcast applications.
M. Koppetz
bio
Michael Koppetz is a senior engineer with the R&D department of Arnold & Richter (ARRI). He graduated from the Technical University of Munich in 1986 with a mechanical engineering degree and joined ARRI in the same year. In the course of his career, he took on the responsibility of the optical and mechanical design group at ARRI's Munich facility and was project leader for several new camera products. With the general reorientation of ARRI's R&D activities, Koppetz moved the focus of his work away from the traditional products and today is intensively involved in the company's development of digital camera technologies, contributing expertise based on his background in the design of professional film cameras.
O. Grau
bio
Oliver Grau received a master's degree in electrical engineering and a Ph.D., both from the University of Hanover, Germany, in 1991 and 1999, respectively. From 1991 to 2000 he worked as a research scientist at the University of Hanover and was involved in several industrial, national, and international projects in the field of industrial image processing and 3-D scene reconstruction for computer graphics applications. In April 2000, he joined the BBC Research & Development department as a senior research engineer in the virtual production team. His main interest is in visual engineering, i.e., the application of image processing, computer vision, and computer graphics for the production of visual media. Grau was also organizer of the 1st European Conference on Visual Media Production, in March 2004.
