- Abstract
- A new semi-automatic digital motion picture restoration system for film archives (DIMORF) is introduced, including all stages of restoration, such as scanning, processing and recording. The featured automatism is controlled by occasional operator interactions. All main components are designed and manufactured to meet the special needs of film archive specialists. The film scanner, as well as the laser recorder, reaches a resolution of 6K. The scanner contains a line camera and is able to scan the entire surface of the film, including perforation. The laser recorder, under construction at the time of this proposal uses a rotating mirror to reflect light onto the film positioned on the inner surface of the recorder drum The PC-based digital processing unit includes a standalone framework and has a plug-in-based modular interface ready for forthcoming restoration algorithms Built-in film correction includes stabilization de-flicker blotch detection scratch removal de-noising color manipulation and de-fade effects Interactive user-support and adaptive algorithms are designed to help semi-automatic operation and thus reduce manpower costs

László Czúni is a research fellow in the department of image processing and neurocomputing at the University of Veszprém, Hungary. He has an M.Sc. (1996) and Ph.D. (2001) in information technology. His main interests include image processing and analysis and pattern recognition. Czúni is involved in several projects such as film restoration, image retrieval, and spatial data mining.A. Hanisbio
Attila Hanis obtained an M.Sc. degree in information technology from the University of Veszprém in 1998. Currently, he is a research fellow at the University of Veszprém and is working on his Ph.D. dissertation. His research interests are video segmentation and video indexing.L. Kovácsbio
Levente Kovács has been working towards a Ph.D. degree in image processing at the University of Veszprém, Hungary, since 2002. His current research interests include non-photorealistic stroke-based image-rendering techniques and image restoration methods. Balázs Kránicz is an assistant professor at the Colour and Multimedia Laboratory, University of Veszprém, Hungary. He graduated (same university) in 1997 with an M.Sc. in informatics. He defended his doctoral theses in 2002. Kránicz's research fields are interpolation methods for spectral measurements, deconvolution procedures, spectral fitting of optical detectors by filter packages, determining spectral sensitivity functions, and colorimetric characteristics of computer peripheries, daylight simulators.A. Attila Licsár received an M.Sc. degree in computer science from the University of Veszprém in 2001. Presently, he is a Ph.D. student in the field of image processing in the department of image processing and neurocomputing of the same university. His major research interests involve human-computer interaction, gesture analysis, and digital film restoration, including correction of image vibration and flickering.T. Szirányibio
Tamás Szirányi received a Ph.D. degree in electronics and computer engineering in 1991, and a Ph.D. degree in image processing in 2001 from the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Until 1991, he was a research fellow and head of the opto-electronics R&D department at the Videoton Development Institute, Budapest. At the time, his work involved designing optical data storage, laser printer, and document scanning devices, and also applications of laser systems. Szirányi is currently a scientific advisor at the Computer and Automation Research Institute of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. He is also a full professor in the image processing and neurocomputing department of Veszprém University. He is the founder and past-president (1997–2002) of the Hungarian Image Processing and Pattern Recognition Society (KÉPAF) and was honored with the Master Professor award in 2001.I. Kasbio
Iván Kas started his career on CAD/CAM systems in the field of electronics at the Computer and Automation Research Institute (SZTAKI) of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. At SZTAKI, he developed automatic testing equipment based on novel measurement principles and algorithms. His doctoral thesis (1981) was based on this topic. Later his interest was focused on intelligent peripheries and laser technology as he participated in the development of various industrial instruments. He developed his skills in the management of several medium-scale development projects and coordinated software development and various domestic R&D projects. Kas has written 28 papers and owns 16 patents. He has been awarded several scientific and industrial prizes.G. Kovácsbio
György L. Kovács graduated, received a Ph.D. degree in habilitation, and became a professor at the Technical University of Budapest, in 1966, 1976, and 1995 respectively. In 1997, he became Dr. of the Academy at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Since 1966, he has worked in the Computer and Automation Institute. Kovács has been head of the CIM Research Laboratory since 1990. He has been a visiting researcher in the U.S., Soviet Union, West Germany, and a visiting professor in Mexico and Italy. Sándor Manno has 30 years of experience working in computer networking and multimedia technology. As a young engineer at the Computer and Automation Research Institute, Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA SZTAKI), he headed a research team that developed and implemented computer communication controllers based on a multi-microprocessor system.
