- Abstract
- The existing methods for measuring display system parameters are decades old. These methods have always assumed a 4:3 aspect ratio for display devices. This has caused problems in the widescreen cinema film application, and resulted in the use of non-standard measurement methods. Electronic displays have now gotten wider as well, which suggests the time has finally come to re-examine the measurement methods used for displays as a whole. This paper examines the requirements for a more complete, more useful, modernized measurement procedure for characterizing wide display performance. It is aimed primarily at the cinema application, both film and electronic-based, but is equally appropriate for other applications of widescreen projectors and other wide displays.
