Abstract
This paper introduces a datacasting coding scheme named Broadcast Markup Language (BML), which is used for both satellite and terrestrial digital broadcasting in Japan. It is based on web technology standards; however, some extensions and restrictions are applied for broadcast. These extensions and restrictions are introduced in this paper.

Akihiro Hori is chief engineer of technology research and development in the department of engineering and technology division at Nippon Television Network Corp. (NTV), based in Tokyo, Japan. He developed the world's first digital watermarking system and progressive scan television system. Prior to joining NTV, Hori worked for Hitachi Central Research Laboratory where he developed a fiber optics system and telecommunication equipment. Hori is a Fellow of SMPTE and chairman of ARIB Datacasting Coding Working Group, as well as the Datacasting Program Exchange Working Group.

Yoshiharu Dewa is a member of ARIB Datacasting Coding Working Group, chairman of the Application Execution Engine Task Group, and sub-chair of the Presentation Engine Task Group. He is also a member of the C#/CLI Japan Industrial Standards drafting committee in the Information Processing Society of Japan/Information Technology Standards Commission of Japan, and a member of Japan Society for Software Science and Technology. In 1993 Dewa joined Pioneer Corp. where he researched multimedia encoding. In 1998 he joined Sony Corp. where he worked on a series of standardization of International Standard for Multimedia encoding scheme (SC29WG12(MHEG)). Currently, he works on research of broadcast and network systems. Dewa earned bachelor's and master's degrees in information engineering from Hokkaido University in Japan.
