- Abstract
- The migration from standard-definition (SDTV) to high-definition (HDTV) program content in news, sports, and special events coverage has forced broadcast news and field-production managers to find transmission technology that can support higher bit rates for HD-ENG transport streams, with the same signal margins, in the new 12 MHz-channel plan of the 2-GHz BAS or the existing 7-GHz band. This paper examines terrestrial microwave radio transmission techniques that allow contribution bit rates in excess of 80 Mbits/sec in field production applications. It describes the tradeoffs in radio performance associated with specific applications in regard to bit rate versus bandwidth versus carrier-to-noise ratio (CNR) threshold, and how they relate to maximum microwave path distances.

bio
Michael C. Payne is vice-president, marketing and business development for Microwave Radio Communications (MRC). His responsibilities include strategic planning, forecasting, and new product introduction. Payne has over 19 years of experience in the microwave radio industry. Positions held during his tenure at MRC include project engineer, product line manager, and director of engineering. As director of engineering, Payne was responsibile for all aspects of product development at MRC, where his team introduced the CodeRunner family of digital transmitters and receivers and TwinStream and DAR Plus long haul products. Prior to his current marketing and business development position, he spent five years in operations as a senior manager. In 2005, Payne earned an Executive MBA from Suffolk University and in 1989, he earned a BSEE from Wentworth Institute of Technology, both located in Boston, MA. Payne holds a U.S. patent for Methods and Apparatus for Transmitting Analog and Digital Information Signals. - Copyright
