- Abstract
- This paper provides a technical review of the Chinese Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting Standard (DTTB), which defines the physical layer transmission protocol, including the frame structure, channel coding, and modulation schemes. Key technologies adopted into this standard, such as time-domain synchronous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDS-OFDM), etc., are discussed in detail. Measurement results from independent third parties show satisfactory receiving performance of high-definition and standard-definition TV signals under both indoor and outdoor environments for fixed and mobile reception. Major differences between this Chinese standard and the Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial (DVB-T) standard, which has the largest deployment worldwide and also occupies an 8-MHz analog bandwidth, are also briefly addressed.

Jian Song received B.Eng and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 1990 and 1995, respectively, and worked there upon his graduation. He worked at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Waterloo, Canada, in 1996 and 1997, respectively. He also worked at Hughes Network Systems in the U.S. for seven years, before joining the faculty team in Tsinghua in 2005. He is now the director of Tsinghua's DTV Technology R&D center. Song's primary research interest is in physical layer and he has been working in different areas of fiberoptic, satellite, and wireless communications, as well as powerline communications. His current research interest is in the area of digital TV broadcasting. Song has published more than 50 journal and conference papers and holds one US patent.Changyong PanTsinghua University, Beijing, Chinabio
Changyong Pan received a bachelor's and master's degree from the Electronic Engineering Department of Tsinghua University in 1996 and 1998, respectively. He is an associate professor in the same department at Tsinghua University and is now mainly engaged in research on broadband digital communications and digital terrestrial TV broadcasting. He holds six patents and has published more than 60 academic papers. Pan has received two National Invention Awards and two Ministerial Awards.Jun WangTsinghua University, Beijing, Chinabio
Jun Wang received B.Eng. and PhD degrees from the Department of Electronic Engineering at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China, in 1999 and 2003, respectively. Since 2000, he has been an assistant professor and member of the Digital TV R&D Center of Tsinghua University. His main research interests focus on broadband wireless transmission techniques, especially synchronization and channel estimation. He is actively involved in technical activities for the Chinese national Digital Terrestrial Television Broadcasting standard and was selected by the Standardization Administration of China as a Standard committee member for drafting.Jintao WangTsinghua University, Beijing, Chinabio
Jintao Wang received B.Eng and PhD degrees in electrical engineering from Tsinghua University, in 2001 and 2006, respectively. Since 2006, he has worked at the Digital TV R&D Center of Tsinghua University. His main research interest is broadband wireless transmission, especially channel estimation and transmission diversity techniques. As a standard committee member for drafting, he is actively involved in the Chinese DTTB national standard. Wang has published more than 20 journal and conference papers and holds two patents.Zhixing YangTsinghua University, Beijing, Chinabio
Zhixing Yang is a full professor in the Department of Electronics Engineering at Tsinghua University. He is the executive director of the State Key Laboratory on Microwave & Digital Communications in China, and the executive director of the development group of the Digital Television Terrestrial Broadcasting State Standard for China. Yang has received several awards and holds several patents. His research interests are in high-speed data transmission over broadband digital television terrestrial broadcasting, wireless links, wireless communication theory, and communication systems design. - Copyright
