Abstract
There is a growing need for exchanging content among heterogeneous content management systems without altering their management structure (e.g., database schema, original file format). To guarantee the original structure of each system, an exchange method should be flexible in order to be applicable to various environments. This paper describes a flexible content exchange framework that enables systems to exchange essence and metadata by means of both consolidated (i.e., MXF) and separate (i.e., original essence file and XML) methods. The DMS-1-based exchange metadata scheme is designed to be equally applicable to both methods, therefore systems can handle content equally, regardless of exchange methods. Furthermore, exchange protocols in this framework facilitate this two-way exchange. The exchange protocols also enable systems to exchange content via FTP or basic TCP/IP and upload or download the content according to their intentions. The proposed framework has already been standardized inside the Korean Broadcasting System as a way of exchanging content between production systems. Also, a validation tool that validates the conformity of each system to its standard has been implemented. It is expected that this flexible framework and standardization will accelerate content sharing among independent systems.

Byunghee Jung received MS and PhD degrees in electrical engineering and computer science from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 1996 and 2006, respectively. She works at the Broadcast Technical Research Institute of KBS, where she is currently researching metadata and retrieval issues for broadcast content services via networks. She is interested in issues relating to multimedia analysis and retrieval, video abstraction, and contents exchange mechanism. Jung received a Best Article Award for 2006 from Asia Broadcasting Union (ABU). She is a member of the editorial committee of the Journal of the Korea Society of Broadcasting Engineers, in the area of video retrieval and broadcast content services.

bio
Yeonhee Oh is a research engineer at the Broadcast Technical Research Institute of KBS. After graduating from Seoul National University in 2000, with a degree in computer engineering, she joined Oracle Korea Ltd. as a technical engineer, having worked 18 months on the development of a web application engine. In 2002, Oh received an MSc in data communications, networks, and distributed systems from the University College London. Since then, she has been working on the MXF, content identifier and metadata framework for IT-based production and archive at KBS. Her current research issues are ID-based content search and content interface, and innovative broadcast content services for future broadcasting.
