Abstract: At NAB'97 the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) demonstrated high-definition television (HDTV) and data broadcasting using the ATSC digital TV standard. The demonstration featured over-the-air broadcasts from a local Las Vegas television station, with program distribution from the model HDTV station in Washington, D.C., to Las Vegas. This paper describes the design and implementation of the demonstration, including the main constraints and issues affecting the system architecture and equipment. Also mentioned are some of the problems encountered and how they were overcome. The paper concludes with the lessons learned from the demonstration and how HDTV systems in the future may be improved using new techniques and equipment.

Graham Jones is engineering director for the Broadcast Division of Harris Corp. Currently he directs the DTV Express project, and is responsibile for DTV system design and implementation. Previously, at the ATTC, he coordinated implementation of the ATSC high-definition television demonstrations at NAB'97. Jones was a partner in International Broadcasting Consultants for which he designed many television and radio broadcast systems in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. He started his career with the BBC in London, and worked for a period with Ampex Corp. He sits on the ATSC Implementation Subcommittee and on the Technical Committee of the Model High-Definition TV Station, WHD-TV. Jones holds a degree in physics from Nottingham University, U. K. He is a Chartered Electrical Engineer, and a member of SMPTE and the Royal Television Society.
