- Abstract
- A filtering system using liquid organic colorants as optical filters for metal halide HMI lamps is discussed. The liquid filtering solution is continuously circulated, allowing variations in the solutions concentration to effect color temperature changes. In this study, three colorants in a water solvent were used to bring an HMI globe with a color temperature of about 5500°K down to 3200°K. This was done using the organic chemicals methylene orange, methyl blue, and acid fuchsin in combination. Many advantages of this technique over the use of gelatin filters have been identified. Among these, infinite variability in color temperature control, speed with which color temperature changes can be effected, and reduction of heat directly in front of the light source are the most important.
