Abstract
Modern loudspeaker systems are discussed from the dual viewpoints of user's requirements and expectations and manufacturer's design methodologies. The per-formance attributes of response uniformity, time-domain behavior, directionality, electrical interface, and nonlinearities are discussed in detail. A primer on loudspeaker-room interface is presented to help the user in making practical decisions regarding installation.

John Eargle holds bachelor's and master's degrees in both music and engineering. He is president of JME Consulting and senior director of product development and application for JBL Professional in Northridge, CA, where he has specialized in the area of loudspeaker systems for motion picture and recording operations for more than a quarter century. He is a member of SMPTE, ASA, a senior member of IEEE, and a fellow and past president of AES. In 2002, along with two other JBL engineers, he received a Science and Engineering Award from the Motion Picture Academy. In 2001, he received a Grammy for Best Classical Engineering.
