Abstract
This paper examines the many parameters of a CRT-based display that are taken for granted, but which need explicit definition for displays of different technologies. It then describes the standardization of these parameters.

Nigel Seth-Smith joined Gennum in 2002 as part of a team responsible for strategic new product definition. He represents Gennum on the International Telecommunications Union-Radiocommunication (ITU-R) and the Digital Television Group (DTG), where he chairs a working group on flat panel displays used for broadcast monitoring. Before joining Gennum, Seth-Smith worked in R & D design and engineering management at a number of organizations, including the Independent Broadcasting Authority, Scientific-Atlanta, Digital Processing Systems, and Snell & Wilcox. He has been a member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE) since 1982, and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) since 1995. He has published a number of patents and papers and has made presentations at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC), Montreux, and the International Conference on Consumer Electronics (ICCE).
