- Abstract
- The industry has several solutions for tagging files and streams with metadata intended to signal the language of a component. This paper discusses the business requirements of language tagging and proposes a scheme that is Material eXchange Format (MXF)-compliant, and eXtensible Markup Language (XML)-compliant that builds on the most widely implemented MXF metadata standard, DMS-1. The paper illustrates examples of use of the annotation scheme and shows how accurate metadata can lead to improved identification and retrieval of material. It also shows that selecting the correct language for playout or processing requires not just the language name, but often the region, dialect, and business rules such as presence of profanity. In addition, example files, applications, and deployment are illustrated and integration with automation and asset management via XM-based interfaces are also highlighted.

bio
Bruce Devlin graduated from Queens' College Cambridge in 1986 and has been working in the broadcast industry ever since. He joined the BBC Research Department working on Radio-Camera systems before moving to France where he worked on sub-band and MPEG coding for Thomson. He joined Snell & Wilcox in 1993 where he started the company's work on compression coding. Devlin is vice-president of technology at AmberFin, a new company, created as part of the Snell & Wilcox Group that is a dedicated home for its award-winning iCR software. Devlin holds several patents in the field of compression, has written international standards, and contributed to books on MPEG and file formats. He is co-author of the MXF File Format Specification and an active contributor to the work of SMPTE and the AMWA. Devlin is a SMPTE Fellow. - Copyright
