Abstract
The intention of the stereoscopic digital intermediate (DI) process to date has been to make the best color and contrast choices to accommodate lower screen illumination levels of 3-D projection systems. Traditionally, the DI phase of 3-D production has employed 2-D techniques to correct the individual image sequences representing the left and right eyes. The process has required treatment of the 3-D film as two separate 2-D sequences without regard to stereoscopic issues. Each eye is corrected to match the 2-D version of the film in separate passes, then a global correction is applied to both eyes to compensate for the loss in light level in projection, and finally, individual shot and scene corrections are made as needed. This methodology, while accomplishing the task, is cumbersome and time-consuming at a phase in a film's production schedule when time is of the essence. The ability to make corrections and see the results in realtime has not been possible until recently. With the resurgence of stereoscopic 3-D cinema, the film post-production community is experiencing a renaissance in the development of 3-D tools.

Rob Engle is senior stereographer and digital effects supervisor at Sony Pictures Imageworks, where he is currently working on the stereoscopic version of the film G-Force. Prior to G-Force, Engle served as stereographer and 3-D digital effects supervisor on Robert Zemeckis' Beowulf. In that capacity he was responsible for all creative and technical aspects of adapting the film for its release in digital and IMAX 3-D theaters. Preceding his work on Beowulf 3-D, Engle supervised Monster House 3-D, Open Season: An Imax 3-D Experience and the breakthrough release of Zemeckis' The Polar Express: An Imax 3-D Experience among numerous other films. As recent interest in 3-D cinema has peaked, Engle's artistic and technical expertise have made him a highly sought-after speaker at industry events. He is a member of the Visual Effects Society (VES) Board of Directors and co-chair of the VES Archives Committee. He holds a Master of Science degree in computer science from Stanford University and a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Colorado.
Buzz Hays
bio
Buzz Hays is senior producer of 3-D stereoscopic feature films at Imageworks, where he is responsible for overseeing the adaptation of standard release feature films into three-dimensional stereoscopic versions for the IMAX 3-D and digital 3-D platforms. He is one of the leading experts in the field of modern stereoscopic film production. Most recently, he produced the 3-D version of Robert Zemeckis' Beowulf. Hays' work also includes producing the 3-D version of the Imagemotion performance-capture film Monster House , as well as the first CG feature from Sony Pictures Animation, Open Season. Prior to joining Imageworks, Hays worked for Radium where he executive produced visual effects for numerous music videos and broadcast commercials worldwide. Hays holds a Master of Fine Arts in Film Production from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor of Science in Theatre Lighting and Scenic Design from the University of Maine. He is a member of the Producer's Guild of America and the Visual Effects Society.
