- Abstract
- Since the advent of file-based technologies, innovative and powerful implementation strategies are being used for broadcast, news, post, and Digital Intermediate (DI) workflows. This paper covers four key features of these workflows—namely system design considerations, process orchestration, operational aspects (what, how, when, where, who), and workflow agility factors. Several fundamental flow models have been developed that have become components in other more elaborate systems. Select examples are given, including high availability concepts, documenting workflow using unified modeling language (UML) diagrams, file transfer advantages, loosely coupled design ideas, service-oriented architecture (SOA) integration, and more. Best practice guidelines are offered for several scenarios.

bio
Al Kovalick has worked in the field of hybrid AV/IT systems for the past 15 years. Previously, he was a digital systems designer and technical strategist for Hewlett-Packard (HP). While at HP, he was a principal researcher and architect for a new product-class of signal synthesizer. Additionally, he was the principal architect of HP's first VOD server. Following HP, from 1999 to 2004, he was the CTO of the Broadcast Products Division at Pinnacle Systems. He currently serves as a strategist and fellow at Avid Technology. Kovalick is an active speaker, educator, author and participant with industry bodies including SMPTE and AMWA. He has presented over 50 papers at industry conferences worldwide and holds 18 U.S. and foreign patents. He is the author of the 600-page book Video Systems in an IT Environment. Kovalick has a BSEE degree from San Jose State University and an MSEE degree from the University of California at Berkeley. He is a SMPTE Fellow and life member of Tau Beta Pi. - Copyright
