- Abstract
- This paper presents a method of lossless to lossy transcoding of images that takes advantage of bitplane coding in JPEG 2000. Decoding JPEG 2000 lossless codestreams and subsequently re-encoding them into JPEG 2000 lossy streams consumes lots of computational time. To reduce this time, partial decoding of the lossless codestream is proposed. In addition, by employing a unique rate control, the image quality degradation usually associated with partial decoding is reduced. Experimental results show dramatically reduced computational complexity while the subjective image quality closely approximates that of full lossless decoding.

bio
Takahiro Fukuhara is a senior project manager at B2B business department of Sony Corp. in Japan. His activities have primarily focused on designing and implementing algorithms for image compression such as MPEG-4, AVC, and JPEG 2000. Fukuhara contributed to the standardization of JPEG 2000 and served as a project editor of JPEG 2000 Part1 amendment-1 and amendment-2. His current interest is image processing, image identification, and transcoding between different video compressed files, required for various applications including digital cinema. Fukuhara holds 39 U.S. patents in those fields and some of them are identified as essential patents for AVC by MPEG-LA. He is the first author of “JPEG 2000 Technology” (Japanese) published by CQ Publishing Co., Ltd. He was a recipient of the 1992 Institute of Electronics, Information, and Communication Engineers (IEICE) New Engineer Award for his work on intellectual image compression. He also won the 2007 IPSJ Contribution to International Standardization award for his work on JPEG 2000.Katsutoshi AndoWorks in the B2B business department of Sony Corp. in Japan.bio
Katsutoshi Ando currently works in the B2B business department of Sony Corp. in Japan. He received B.E. and M.E. degrees in electrical engineering from Tokyo Metropolitan University in 2000 and 2002, respectively. In 2002 he joined Sony Corp. where he has been engaged in research and development on image compression such as JPEG 2000. He is a member of IEICE in Japan.Hitoshi Kiyabio
Hitoshi Kiya joined Tokyo Metropolitan University in 1982, where he is currently a professor in the Graduate School of System Design. From 1995 to 1996 he attended the University of Sydney, NSW, Australia as a Visiting Fellow. Kiya's research interests are in the areas of multirate systems and image processing, including filter bank design and theory, image and video coding, image watermarking and data hiding, and subband adaptive filtering. He has published numerous journal articles and international conference papers and has authored five books in these areas. He received an Excellent Paper Award in 2008 from the IEICE. Kiya served as an associate editor of IEICE Transactions Fundamentals and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Transactions on Signal Processing from 1998 to 2002 and from 1998 to 2000, respectively. He currently serves as a vice president of the IEICE Engineering Science Society and is Editor-in-Chief of IEICE ESS Magazine. - Copyright
