- Abstract
- This paper describes performance evaluation of MPEG-4 AVC and JPEG 2000 compression technologies for high-definition video signals at a wide range of high bit rates. Brief technical overviews of both standards are first presented, and then simulations are performed on an extensive set of HD video sequences are discussed. Two MPEG-4 AVC modes: an all-intra coding mode and a low-delay inter-predictive coding mode are used. Based on the simulation results, it is observed that at high bit rates, the performance of both modes of MPEG-4 AVC is quite similar to that of JPEG 2000. However, at medium and low ranges of bit rates, MPEG-4 AVC generally outperforms JPEG 2000 with a greater visual difference when the inter-predictive mode is employed.

Ali Jerbi is currently a market manager at SPVTG, Cisco Systems. Before his position at Cisco, Jerbi served as the R&D manager and general manager of UB Video, where he was responsible for the development of standards-based video encoding products, particularly H.264-based products for the video conferencing and broadcast markets. Jerbi also served as a research officer in the Vision and Sensors Group of the National Research Council of Canada where he led many industrial projects involving machine vision. Jerbi is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). He has coauthored many journal, conference, and technical papers in the areas of video analysis and coding. He holds B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from the Georgia Institute of Technology.Jaehan Inbio
Jaehan In is currently a senior research engineer at SPVTG, Cisco Systems, where he is leading a video quality research team responsible for design and development of algorithms for H.264-based broadcast encoders. His research interests include image and video compression and transmission, rate control, quantization, and subjective image and video analysis. He also worked as a research engineer at Image Power and UB Video, where he was involved in standardization efforts and development of algorithms for multimedia compression standards including JBIG2, JPEG, JPEG 2000 and H.264. In received B.S. and M.S.E degrees concurrently in 1996 from the Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, and an M.A.Sc. degree in 1998 from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, BC, Canada, all in electrical and computer engineering. - Copyright
