- Abstract
- Digital technologies have entered movie production and distribution and become more and more important for archives. Key factors in digital film archiving are the data formats that are used to store images, sound, and metadata. These formats must be carefully chosen to ensure that future generations will be able to view the movies of today. This article describes the formats that are used by the digital film archive system concept and prototype implementation that is under development in the European EDCine project. The most important properties of the chosen format, JPEG 2000, and the profiles for use in film archiving that have been proposed for standardization are described. The second part of the article explains the practical application of JPEG 2000 and workflows to encode image data to these profiles and back to distribution formats.

bio
Arne Nowak is Project Manager for digital film archives at Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS in Erlangen, Germany. He received a degree in electrical engineering from Ilmenau Technical University and started his professional career in 2002, with research and development work in the field of digital TV production systems including file-based production and realtime graphics. Nowak joined Fraunhofer IIS to work on a digital film archive system in 2006. Since then, he has been responsible for the development of the archive system's architecture, for which he led the user requirements analysis, and coordinates the software implementation and testing. Nowak also contributes to projects on digital post-production workflows, image compression, and image processing. He is a member of Fernseh-und Kinotechnische Gesellschaft e.V. (FKTG) and the Association of Moving Image Archivists (AMIA).Siegfried FöβelDigital Cinema Group at Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS.bio
Siegfried Föβel heads the Digital Cinema Group at Fraunhofer Institute for Integrated Circuits IIS. He started his professional career as an engineer at Fraunhofer IIS in Erlangen. From 1994 to 2001 he was responsible first for the business fields process automation and image processing systems, later for industrial sensor systems. In 2000 he received a Ph.D. degree from the University of Erlangen. Since 2001 Föβel has been project manager and coordinator for all projects in the field of digital cinema within Fraunhofer IIS. This includes the development of new high-resolution cameras such as the ARRI D20, standardization activities of new data compression algorithms for digital cinema, development of new storage devices, and the definition of enhanced workflows. In 2001, Föβel became a member of the ISO JPEG Group. He is a member of SMPTE, FKTG, Deutsches Institut für Normung (DIN) and EDCF. Within the JPEG Group, he chairs the Adhoc Group for Digital Cinema and Motion JPEG 2000. - Copyright
