Abstract
It has been pointed out by one of us<sup>1</sup> that many of the commonly accepted theories regarding the mechanism of speech production are erroneous. Heretofore, visual observation of the laryngeal cavity by means of special instruments supported by the evidence of X-ray pictures during phonation has been utilized in these studies. In the present paper we describe a new method of approach, a method which, when it is perfected, promises to be most valuable both in the continuance of the studies and in the presentation of findings to an audience. The motion pictures which have thus far been made, though their photographic quality is in no wise as good as we believe we can obtain, nevertheless indicate clearly the possibilities of the method.
