Abstract
Due to the mechanical nature of motion picture film, inaccuracies in positioning a single image can occur at the moment of exposure, projection, or scanning and are the reason for steadiness errors that are evidenced in jitter of the whole image. This jitter is not limited to translations but may also include rotational and shearing motion components. The extent of these erroneous movements lies in the area of modern film scanner resolution and becomes a problem when scanning motion picture film, especially in realtime. An algorithm is proposed that estimates motion parameters for every image, including the steadiness error component. On the basis of the sequence of these motion parameters, a correction signal can be calculated to suppress the subjective jitter of the motion picture.
