Abstract: A television system known as “Scanoscope” has been developed in which the aspect ratio has been changed from the conventional 4 × 3 format into an 8 × 3 presentation. Advantages are analogous to those in wide-screen motion pictures. The process is based on the Scanoscope lens described in the succeeding paper in this Journal. This lens squeezes the image on the camera focal plane, from which it is transmitted with the required megacycle bandwidth. The image is unsqueezed electronically in the monitor. The optical and electronic features are described.
