Abstract: Development of improved translucent screens for process projection has resulted from improved manufacturing techniques which have been accompanied by a systematic study of the characteristics of these screens and improved instrumentation for measuring and controlling these characteristics. This paper discusses the “semi-diffuse” transmission of light by translucent screens, using an empirical approach which has been found very useful in the analysis of these screens and which can readily be adapted to reflective screens as well. Applications of this method to the analysis of screen characteristics are considered and a way of rating screen performance against the optimum which might be expected for a given type of screen is indicated.
