Abstract: A systematic study covering six variables shown by preliminary tests to be most important in splicing “Cronar” polyester base by the application of ultrasonic energy showed complex interactions. However, a good operating range was found which yielded useful splices, without scraping of the emulsion, with as little as 0.010-in. overlap and splices as strong as the base itself at an overlap of 0.030 in. The splicer designed and used in these studies could handle 8, 16, 35 and 70mm films and hence permitted tests covering a wide range of conditions of use.
