Abstract: It can already be seen that the activity patterns of the entire broadcast community have been influenced by the electronic newsgathering experience. The use of ENG equipment has pointed up the need for videotape equipment that allows post-production editing in the manner most adaptable to the expertise of film technologists, which implies non-real-time viewing. Current film and television production methods are reviewed, and the technical formats of several videotape production systems are discussed. Emphasis is on the features of the nonsegmented helical-scan formats that allow frame-by-frame search as with film viewers.
