A Sound Film Re-Recording Machine

Abstract: In sound picture production, the process of making the release print negative for sound requires the reproduction of the existing positive sound record in order that it may be recorded in proper continuity and corrected for volume level. The machine used for this purpose is called a “re-recording machine.” This paper describes a new re-recording machine recently made available which is suitable for use in studios using either the variable density or variable width method of recording sound. The machine described employs a novel type of film aperture and a new method of focusing the sound lamp. To insure uniformity of film movement and to eliminate unwanted noises in the re-recording process, the workmanship must be of the highest order. Some of the requirements and testing methods employed in the manufacture of the machine are discussed.
