Abstract: In the course of the Navy aviation training program, a projector had to be designed to project the image of a target vessel on a curved cyclorama screen, and to make this projected image perform all the real and apparent motions of an actual battleship, as seen from the cockpit of a maneuvering aircraft. The projected image had to wander all around the horizon. It had to become larger and smaller under due consideration of the angle of depression corresponding to that particular range. Also, the projected target had to be able to make all kinds of turns and maneuvers to simulate actual combat conditions. To achieve all this a special nonintermittent 16-mm film projector for variable speed and variable magnification was built, and is described in the following paper.
