Abstract
The ATSC DTV application software environment (DASE) proposed standard represents an aggressive effort to blend digital television with computer technologies, including the internet. Primary goals include interoperability and increased ease in the development of interactive television (iTV) applications. This paper will explain what DASE is, its architecture, why and how it will be useful, and how it will affect end users, broadcasters, and consumer electronics manufacturers across the globe. The roadmap for future additions and updates to DASE is presented, as well as the results of trial broadcasts in Korea during the 2002 World Cup.
