Abstract: This survey covers phototemplate methods now in use in the Southern California airframe industry. These methods are concerned with the photographic reproduction of original engineering line drawings. Although the methods outlined are most extensively used in the manufacture of aircraft at the present time, they can be readily adapted to other fields where the rapid, accurate, and economical reproduction of engineering information is required. Engineers in the airframe industry are certain phototemplate methods will be indispensable in meeting postwar competition; it is thought other industries with similar line reproduction problems will find these methods indispensable to their post-war operations. Accordingly, working details on the following procedures, which have been proved by heavy production use, are given for the information and guidance of engineers: excitation, camera; and reflex methods; other satisfactory but less extensively used methods; and practical methods for applying gelatin-silver-halide emulsions to surfaces at the work site. The survey concludes with a table giving comparative cost and production data on the 3 major methods.
