Abstract: The first half of this paper will present to the motion picture technician a review of magnetic-recording theory; the second half consists of experimental data taken with the new magnetic-recording equipment of the Radio Corporation of America. Input-output, frequency-response, and distortion data, which were taken under test conditions familiar to motion picture technicians, are presented, There are many excellent articles available which treat the various aspects of this subject. Those who are interested in the detailed scientific explanations are referred to these articles, listed in the bibliography, and to the extensive patent literature. This paper attempts to consolidate the information in these articles in simplified form and to provide a useful picture of the phenomena in magnetic recording and reproduction for those whose primary interest is in the application of the theory.
