Abstract
Much has been made in trade journals and popular press about the role of competition as traditional telecommunications companies enter the established purview of cable and satellite video providers. Much has also been made about the new possibilities enabled by the use of internet protocol (IP) to deliver video. These are important issues, but there are other critical topics that have received scant attention. The purpose of this paper is to examine one of those critical yet neglected topics—the role of professional broadcast encoders in next-generation television services.
