Abstract
An overview of the layered structure of the ATSC Mobile DTV system is presented. This paper is intended to be an introduction; detailed explanations of the technology are available from other sources. All of the mobile DTV system elements are mentioned, including existing protocols that have been adapted for mobile/handheld use, and new features that are unique to the system.

Wayne E. Bretl
bio
Wayne Bretl is a principal engineer in the R & D Department at Zenith Electronics. He received a BSEE from Illinois Institute of Technology in 1966, and joined Zenith in 1975. He holds more than 15 patents in television technology and related areas. Bretl is a senior member of IEEE, and a member of SMPTE, the Audio Engineering Society (AES), and the Society for Information Display (SID) and represents Zenith in ATSC and a number of professional and industry associations. Bretl is a co-recipient of the 2006 IEEE Masaru Ibuka Consumer Electronics Award, for his contributions to the development of the vestigial sideband (VSB) digital transmission system for digital television broadcasting. He also received the SMPTE David Sarnoff Medal Award in 2006, for his contributions to television engineering.
