- Abstract
- It is no coincidence that, for the past ten years or so, an increase in the number of file-based systems available to professional media organizations has paralleled an increased focus on workflow and the operations aspects of media technology. One driver for software tools in professional media is versatility, after all; and with an increase in the number of options available to the end user comes an increased anxiety around configurations and using tools in the “right way.” The problem is further compounded today, as individual file-based islands of technology make way for the end-to-end digital workflow. Many media facilities in the industry today deal with video/audio signal only at ingest and playout, and some facilities do not deal with video and audio signals at all! The undergrowth of SDI cabling has been cleared in favor of Cat-5 and Cat-6, and the library of tapes has become a single RAID.
