Abstract: Uniqueness of content sets one motion picture apart from any other. Yet to reach its audience at all, that same motion picture must be precisely standardized, a rigorous condition not imposed upon any other creative product. One of SMPTE's jobs is to determine “how standard.” How this is done through test films is explained in this paper.
