Abstract: Automated systems now perform nearly all the functions of theatrical presentation, including lighting, curtains, sound, background music and projection. It is readily conceivable that multiple theaters could be operated automatically and efficiently from a single remote-control center. The motion-picture projector plays a vital role in these applications. Combined with the extensive use of the projector in other (technical) fields, this suggests the need for an entire new look at projection system design from reel to reel. The characteristics necessary to achieve a high degree of automation and operational flexibility are discussed, and details are given of some methods successfully employed to attain these goals in equipment of recent design. Since the heart of any motion-picture projector is the intermittent film-transport mechanism, considerable emphasis is placed on the role of this device in the projection system.
