Abstract: Chemical-process engineers working with film-processing technicians in a major effort have developed new film-processing facilities for high-speed processing of the new Eastman Color SP Print II film. The new facilities have major advantages compared with facilities that have just evolved. The from-the-ground-up approach was taken in the interests of reducing ecological impact, improving worker safety and convenience, and turning out high-quality product at lower cost. Subsystems of the facilities are discussed in detail, including flowrators, tanks, temperature control, recirculation control, washwaters, replenishment, filtering, silver recovery, and chemical control. Very careful monitoring and control are needed throughout, but economies in materials, lessened environmental impact, improved safety, and a sense of accomplishment by technicians who are also achieving a high-quality product are cited as major gains. Additional experience is expected to lead to further advances.
