- Abstract
- Digital special effects enhance the utility of the basic television frame synchronizer. As a production tool, the synchronizer offers the effects of picture freeze, animation, size change, positioning, and quad freeze, as well as a range of re-entry or “hall-of-mirrors” effects. In teleproduction applications, the quality of each special effect is of prime importance — much more than the gamut of tricks possible with a given piece of equipment. The keys to quality include proper sampling of the input video and careful design of the digital algorithms employed to manipulate the picture. Four-times-subcarrier sampling offers wider bandwidth and greater precision in the digital filtering, compression, and chrominance inversion processes. Field freeze permits motion to be stopped without interfield flutter. Picture compression is achieved by changing the number of picture elements per line and lines per field that contain information from the input picture. Variable positioning is accomplished by altering the framestore addresses such that the relationship between sync timing and picture timing is changed. The television framestore, with the addition of a handful of relatively simple but well engineered special effects, can work with any switcher or external keyer to provide a wide variety of production possibilities.
