Abstract: In general, television pictures derived from film show a greater variation in technical quality than those produced by electronic cameras. In many cases this is probably due to the film itself: different film formats, production methods and film materials can give rather variable results. Nevertheless, the wide variety of existing telecines, together with different operating procedures, may also contribute to the problem. Because of these differing standards of performance in telecine channels, problems occasionally arise in the exchange of television programs on film. To obtain a survey of the color-transmission quality of the telecines within the EBU organizations, Sub-Group G3 of EBU Working Party G undertook, in 1975, an experimental assessment of their colorimetric fidelity characteristics. This study covered thirty 16mm telecines and eight 2 × 2 slide scanners.
