Abstract
A holographic process suitable for archival preservation of color motion-picture film is described. Using three lasers — one red, one green and one blue — each frame of a color motion picture is transformed into a frame of a Fourier color hologram (FCH). Among the salient features of the process are that: (1) the FCHs are recorded on black-and-white film; (2) the colors are supplied by lasers and are therefore inherently constant and reproducible; (3) the color registration is permanent even if the film has shrunk and bent; (4) image contrast is almost automatically conserved and is far less dependent on film gamma than the original image is; (5) no excess storage space is required; and (6) the process potentially entails a very low cost.
