Abstract
Optical-fiber transmission systems can be used as video entrance links for microwave relay and satellite earth stations. An experimental lightwave entrance link was built to transmit near-infrared light at a wavelength of 830 nm. The optical transmitter is modulated with a 70-MHz IF electrical signal that is frequency modulated by a video signal. Tests and analysis indicate that lightwave entrance links are capable of transmitting one color video channel with 68-dB SNR, 0.1-dB differential gain, and 0.5° differential phase, over a distance of at least 4.1 km.
