Abstract: With today's production concepts, the role of the professional make-up artist in motion pictures and television has become that of a laboratory technician and innovator in the physical appearance of the performers. Improvements in the technical quality of film and television electronics have led to new shades of facial coloration in a very naturalistic sense for both men and women, even off the set. Also, character make-up procedures and products have experienced great advances. Development and research in related fields has led to new materials being employed in specialized character make-up, or “make-up special effects” as they now are referred to. Today's make-up artist must be considerably more than just a paint-and-powder-applier. He must have concrete knowledge of the effects of lighting and television electronics or film quality on the appearance of the human face so that he may achieve the most appropriate characterization of the performers for the roles they have to play. He also must be able to create new and exciting applications of his art, as television and film technology vary in their use and application.
