Abstract: Results of research on the reproduction of maps in 35-mm color and black-and-white film are described. This research involved a thorough study of the effect of material, equipment, and processing on resolution. Observations of these effects have been carefully studied and the results are presented with a discussion of some of the factors influencing them. The conclusions drawn from this research are: (1) The reproduction of colored maps in color on 35-mm film is impossible because of the low resolving power of present color emulsions. (2) Reproduction of colored maps in monochrome on 35-mm is not satisfactory because of grain clumping in magnification above 20x. (3) The resolution of an image is a composite function depending on the degree of correction in the optical system producing it, the resolving power of the material reproducing it, and the processing it undergoes.
