Accelerated Life Testing of Metal Particle Tape

Abstract
For the past 50 years the magnetic material of tape has been made from a very fine powder of iron oxide. Over that period of time tests have been carried out to determine how tape deteriorates with time. Temperature, humidity, and the presence of chemical compounds all influence the life of the tape. This article describes the accelerated tests conducted on metal particle D-2 tape for television and data recording. The objectives of the tests were to determine the effect on error rate of D-2 tape and measure the corrosive effects, using a calibrated method, when the tape is subjected to corrosive pollutants. The results are compared with metal-oxide tape and chromium-dioxide tape subjected to identical exposure.
