Abstract: A feasibility model of an electrostatic color map printer using Electrofax paper has been constructed and demonstrated under a contract with the U.S. Army Engineering Research and Development Laboratories, Fort Belvoir, Va. This machine is designed to print five-color, 22 by 29-in. maps by optical exposure from 70mm cartographic separations. The feasibility equipment uses liquid color Electrofax development with electronic flash exposure triggered photoelectrically from the paper. The machine is web fed, the paper transport being accomplished by means of air bearings. The Electrofax approach to tactical map reproduction greatly reduces the requirement for storage of large quantities of printed maps. It reduces the logistics problems to supply of raw material. The make-ready time is a few minutes.
