Communication Aspects of High-Speed Photography

Abstract: A high-speed camera may be viewed as a communication system comprising many parallel channels. The rate at which information can be recorded in each channel is given by Shannon's equation, where the bandwidth of the camera is related to its shutter speed, and the signal-to-noise ratio is determined by either film granularity or quantum noise. A few ultra-high-speed electronic cameras are examined and compared from the point of view of information theory. No single figure of merit can be used, the choice of camera parameters depending upon the specific application.
