Abstract: When the motion-picture production division of the Instructional Media Center at Michigan State University moved its entire production facility to a new building, the sound installation was completely disassembled and reassembled. Certain new systems were installed at the time, such as a reversible selsyn interlock system. However, it soon became evident that the mechanical, synchronous motor-driven footage counter located in the mixing console would no longer be adequate due to its inability to reverse direction. The integrated-circuit module seemed to be the best alternative system, so an up-down four-digit counter with numerical readout was designed and constructed, which would silently count actual film footage or time. Several other functions were incorporated in the counter design.
