Abstract: Extensive work done in 1966 is summarized in this posthumous publication. As a result of the presentation by Mr. Lasarev at the 101st SMPTE Conference, a Subcommittee on Tape Transport Geometry was formed within the SMPTE Video-Tape Recording Committee; and it was decided that one of the duties of the subcommittee would be the writing of an extensive tutorial paper on the subject of time-base errors affected by transport geometry. Because of the extensive-ness of the treatment planned, the paper was divided into three sections for presentation as parts were completed. Two parts have been verbally presented at SMPTE Winter TV Conferences and will be published soon in the SMPTE Journal. However, because of the long time involved in preparing the third and last part, as well as the untimely death of Mr. Lasarev in 1968, it has been decided to publish Mr. Lasarev's original paper. The paper only touches upon subjects which will be covered much more extensively ultimately, but it does serve to alert the reader to problem areas which can affect the quality of tape recordings.
