- Abstract
- The introduction of image compression into the field of production technology presents a number of technical and creative opportunities and economic advantages. At the end of 1999, the FKTG (Association for Television, Film, and Electronic Media) in Germany, invited experts on two systems—DVCPRO and MPEG-2 4:2:2—to take part in a panel discussion to give this topic a broader airing in public. These systems and their potential uses were discussed by representatives of their respective companies. This paper describes the result of this discussion.

bio
Rolf Hedtke received a Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering in 1979 from the Institute of Data Processing at the Darmstadt Technical University. He later joined Bosch-Fernseh, Philips-BTS, where he was responsible for software and control systems and was project manager of the D-1 and HDTV-gigabit magnetic tape recorders. Since 1992, Hedtke has been professor at the FH-Wiesbaden, University of Applied Sciences, department of television engineering and electronic media, where he is teaching and researching digital television and MPEG-processing. He is an active member of SMPTE and FKTG. - Copyright
