Abstract
During the transition from analog to digital, the typical video facility must support a mixture of both analog and digital video equipment. This mixed facility requires a combination of analog and digital video performance measurement tools to verify proper video image quality. In many cases, traditional analog video performance measurements can be used to infer proper performance in a digital video transmission system. This paper summarizes performance issues in analog, digital, and mixed analog/digital video transmission systems and discusses methods that can be used to verify proper video performance.

Edward Reuss has been the director of systems engineering at Tiernan Communications since 1996. His responsibilities include systems and architectural issues for MPEG-2 encoders, video processors, and telecommunications interfaces. He worked as a consultant for a variety of test and measurement, and television equipment manufacturers in the San Diego area before accepting his present position at Tiernan. Reuss earned his BSEE and MSEE degrees in 1976 and 1979, respectively, from Colorado State University. His principal field of interest was digital signal processing and estimation theory. Reuss presently serves as Tiernan's liaison to the SMPTE Technical Committee with a particular interest in interface standards and instrument management and control in a studio environment.
