- Abstract
- Data broadcasting promises to be a very significant component in the delivery of digital television services. Both DVB and ATSC have proposed standards for data broadcasting that have commonalities and differences, as well as advantages and disadvantages. The third standard player is the internet community. Although it has contributed to some degree to the development of DVB and ATSC standards, it has a different view and approach to data broadcasting. This paper gives an overview of some emerging standards for DVB, ATSC, and the internet by examining differences between them, as well as discussing the issues related to format conversion and simultaneous broadcasting.

bio
Henry Sariowan received a B.S. degree from the Sepuluh-Nopember Institute of Technology, Surabaya, Indonesia; an M.S. degree from Columbia University, New York City; and a Ph.D. degree from the University of California, San Diego, all in electrical engineering. From 1996 to 1998, he was with Titan Information Systems in San Diego working on the architecture design of a very small aperture terminal (VSAT). Sariowan joined Tiernan Communication in 1998 and is currently working on multiplexing and data broadcasting for high-definition television (HDTV) systems. His research interests are in the areas of quality-of-service provisioning for integrated broadband networks, and protocol design, verification, and simulation. - Copyright
