Abstract: A systems type of approach is recommended when one attempts to design a new system for a particular application — such as a 16mm camera for filming news and documentaries. In doing this, it is necessary (1) to consider the merits and demerits of existing equipment, (2) to remember that design is an ongoing process seeking an optimal goal and (3) to keep in mind the needs of the ultimate user of the new system — and therefore seek reliable and continuous feedback from him. This is what was done in developing the CP-16 and CP-16/A cameras for easy, efficient, on-the-shoulder operation. Some of the features of these systems include: a proven and reliable film-transport mechanism; compatibility with existing recording heads, lenses, etc.; light weight and good balance; extremely accurate crystal-controlled drive motor; operation with long-lasting plug-in batteries (making ac operation a very rare requirement); and the Crystasound recording/playback system to permit both “one-man-band” operation and very versatile operation with a soundman. Lastly, the cameras have been designed to be extremely easy to maintain.
